Anycubic Kobra vs Photon: Which 3D Printer to Buy
Anycubic Kobra vs Photon models are compared by build volume, print detail, speed, running costs, ventilation needs, and slicer support.
If you searched anycubic kobra vs photon which to buy, the useful answer is not “FDM or resin” in the abstract. It is three questions: how big is the largest part you want, how small is the finest feature that has to survive, and can the printer live somewhere with a window you can open. A Kobra 3 Combo lays a 0.4 mm line of PLA across a 250 × 250 × 260 mm bed at a recommended 300 mm/s. A Photon Mono 4 Ultra cures 17 × 17 µm pixels across a 153.4 × 87 × 165 mm plate at up to 120 mm/h with high-speed resin. Those two sentences settle most cases. Cells come from the Anycubic product pages and 3DJake technical data linked at the end; store prices move weekly, so read the last row as a snapshot. The Photons run 0.02 mm layers at minimum. Anycubic publishes no layer range for the Kobras; with a 0.4 mm nozzle expect about 0.08 to 0.28 mm.
Detail: 17 µm pixels against a 0.4 mm line
An FDM wall is never narrower than the extruded line, about 0.4 to 0.45 mm with the stock nozzle on either Kobra. The Mono 4 Ultra’s 17 µm pixel is roughly 25 times finer in XY, and its 0.02 mm layer is a quarter of the finest layer most people run on a Kobra. On a 28 mm figure, eye sockets, chainmail texture and raised lettering on a base are features a 0.4 mm nozzle rounds off or skips. Anycubic’s own FDM versus resin comparison rates resin “Excellent” and FDM “Medium” on print quality and points FDM buyers at “larger models, cosplay items, and household objects”.
The other half of the question is whether anyone will look that closely. A drawer organiser, a bracket or a helmet shell gets sanded, painted or hidden, and those parts also carry load. PLA and PETG on a Kobra, or ABS and ASA inside the S1’s enclosure, are engineering thermoplastics; standard photopolymer is rigid and chips under impact. Speed is measured in different units, and that flips the answer
A Kobra’s speed is nozzle travel in mm/s, so print time scales with part volume and count. A Photon’s speed is Z travel in mm/h, and each layer is one exposure whether one pixel or the whole screen is lit. Twelve 28 mm minis on a Mono 4 Ultra plate take the same time as one. At the rated 120 mm/h, a plate using the full 165 mm of Z is about 1 h 23 min of lift-and-cure; on the non-Ultra Photon Mono 4, rated at 70 mm/h with high-speed resin, the same plate is about 2 h 21 min.
On a Kobra a full bed of small identical parts runs for many hours, because the nozzle visits every millimetre of every wall. Batches of small things favour the Photon; one large thing favours the Kobra.
Running cost and the room it lives in
Per kilogram, Anycubic’s store lists Standard Resin V2 at $27.59 (regular $34.99) and a 10 kg bundle of High Speed PLA at $137.99, about $13.80 per spool. Resin is roughly double, and material is the smaller part of the bill; the larger part is everything around the vat. Anycubic’s curing guide calls for isopropyl alcohol or ethanol at 95 percent or higher, nitrile gloves and a mask, a well-ventilated area, then 1 to 2 minutes of UV for a miniature, 3 to 5 for an average part and 5 to 10 for a large one. The Wash & Cure 3 Plus that handles both steps is $206 on its own. The FDM versus resin page describes resin as “slightly toxic” with “an irritating odor”, and the bottle says to keep it from pregnant women, children and pets. A Kobra needs a spool and a level bed, which is the whole of the paper method and Z offset. An enclosure only becomes necessary for ABS or ASA, and Do You Need a 3D Printer Enclosure? is the test for whether you will. If the printer shares a bedroom or office, the S1’s rated 46 dB standard and 44 dB quiet mode is the reason to pay more than the open-frame Kobra 3.
Software: an Orca fork versus Photon Workshop
Both Kobras slice in Anycubic Slicer Next, which the Kobra 3 page describes as built on open-source OrcaSlicer. Tom’s Hardware’s Kobra S1 review is titled “Good printer, bad slicer” and still puts the hardware in “a select group of printers I trust to just set it and forget it”.
The Photons slice in Photon Workshop. The plain Mono 4 takes files by USB stick only. The Mono 4 Ultra adds Wi-Fi, app notifications and a pressure-sensing system that FauxHammer’s review describes as covering resin level, build-plate zero and dynamic lift-height compensation. It also notes the Ultra ships on ACF film, faster but slightly softer, and that PFA film sharpens miniatures at the cost of speed. Run sliced files through the Photon File Validator before committing a vat of resin.
Which to buy
- Tabletop minis, busts, jewellery masters or scale-model detail parts inside 150 × 85 × 165 mm: Photon Mono 4 Ultra at $344. If you batch plates or print 1:6 figures, the M7 Pro’s 223 × 126 × 230 mm and 170 mm/h justify the extra $218.
- Brackets, enclosures, organisers, cosplay armour, toys, anything taller than 165 mm, or any multicolour job: Kobra 3 Combo at $355 with the ACE Pro included.
- ABS or ASA parts, or a printer in a room where people sleep or work: Kobra S1 Combo at $459 while the sale price holds.
- Tightest budget: Photon Mono 4 at $240 (USB only, 70 mm/h) on the resin side, or a Kobra 3 without the ACE Pro on the FDM side. Older Kobra 2 listings are cheaper and two generations slower.
- Selling on Etsy: minis and display bases go to the Photon. If the shop also sells stands or organisers, budget for both, because neither machine does the other’s job.
- Skip resin if the only spot is a shared living room with no window, or if small children or pets can reach the bench. The gloves, alcohol and odour are daily, not one-time.
How to verify before you spend
Download the exact model you want to print first, not a Benchy, and check its bounding box against the build volume with a 5 mm margin on every axis. Both slicers are free: slice it in Slicer Next at 0.2 mm on the Kobra profile and in Photon Workshop at 0.05 mm on the Photon profile, then read the time estimate and the grams of material. Any feature thinner than 0.8 mm (two walls) or lettering under 5 mm tall will not print cleanly on a Kobra, and that decides it. A part taller than 165 mm, or a resin estimate past a working day for one part, decides it the other way.
